By late 2025, over three billion people had shared travel photos monthly on Instagram, turning trips into performances for the cameras. Destinations became “Disneyfied”, feeling like theme parks rather than real places. I too found myself trapped in taking photos to impress others, not to remember the moment. This made me realize I’d lost touch with the true essence of travel, so I decided to set a unique challenge for my three-day Bangkok trip.
Seeking change, I left digital cameras and phones behind, only bringing a film camera with just 27 shots and a paper map—abandoning Google Maps to avoid digital distractions. At first, I felt lost: so used to shooting endless photos without thought that I didn’t take a single shot on the first day. I just wandered Bangkok’s streets, listening to the clatter (叮咚声) of local cooking pans and smelling street food, something I’d never done before.
In a taxi, I came across the works of German photographers Bernd and Hilla Becher, who focused on repeated, simple subjects in their photography. Inspired, I chose pans as my only theme. With just 27 shots, I had to observe carefully: the shape of each pan, the cooks’ movements, the steam rising from the pans. When I got the film developed, the photos were imperfect, but they caught the raw, unfiltered (未过滤的) beauty of Bangkok’s street life I’d always missed.
What my experience truly revealed was that travel’s most meaningful reward does not come from collecting likes or creating the perfect social media post, but it lies in the conscious choice to slow down and truly connect with places and people without the filter of a camera. In other words, the real joy emerges when we replace the perfect travel photos with a mindful, present engagement with the world.
