Summer camps everywhere are filling up fast, but opportunities remain open for camps where fun and games come around food — growing it, that is. Your kids will learn how to tend to vegetables and livestock (家畜) and almost certainly taste the fruits of their labor. Here are some choices.
Muscoot Farm, New York
This farm offers a half-day Wranglers camp for kids (a livestock-centred experience) and a five-day Young Farmers camp for kids in grades one through eight. Camps range from $150 for week-long half-day sessions to $350 for full-day sessions.
Sproutin’Up, Colorado
A farm with a focus on education, Sproutin’ Up offers skill-building programs for teens throughout the year, but their summer camps for kids are all about fun. In addition to farm activities, the kids spend time at a local climbing gym. Three five-day sessions are available for $250 each.
Farm Camp, California
Located north of San Francisco, this sleep-away camp spreads out over several hundred acres in the coastal hills of Sonoma County. The lodging (寄宿处) is tent-style, with outdoor showers. A range of farm activities are available throughout the summer.

Your kids will clean and brush a horse, and learn to milk a goat at this camp. Three-day sessions (mornings only) cost $125, and parents can attend with their children for an extra fee.

One of my earliest memories is of my father sitting me down at our kitchen table with canvases, paints, and brushes. He taught me how to blend colors and use different materials. Whenever we felt inspired, we set out all our materials and painted what our hearts desired.
My father grew up in a small village in the Dominican Republic. Despite not having many materials available, he created art with whatever he had. My father saved his money to buy paints and colored pencils to draw on the walls around his home. When he was 15, he arrived in America alone and stayed with his aunt in Florida for a while before finishing high school in New York with another aunt. He studied very hard. Eventually, my father was able to obtain his citizenship.
