Among the world’s waste-recycling pioneers, Germany is the leader. The country has quite a detailed way of sorting their waste-down to the color of glass waste, the type of paper, the separate bin for metals, etc.
Here below are what you should know about Germany’s waste sorting system：
◇You are expected to gather your waste in your apartment/housing area’s local public garbage bins.
◇There are commonly several types of public garbage bins available in the German’s apartment/housing areas：
Blue bin — for paper and cardboard
Green and white bin — for glass, different bins for differently colored glass, not available for holiday decorations and lights
Yellow/orange bin — for plastic and metals
Brown bin — for goods that can be changed naturally by bacteria into substances that don’t harm the environment, like leftovers, fruit and vegetables
Gray/black bin — for everything else that can’t be recycled such as used cat litter and animal waste
◇Some items don’t belong in these public garbage bins. Items like used batteries, electronics, unused paints, and lights must be returned to the special agent/locations so they can be properly recycled. Other items such as clothes, shoes, and oversized rubbish and furniture are advised to be donated or sold.
◇There’s this thing called Pfand in Germany, a certain part of the price for a bottled drink that you get back if you send back the bottle to certified (有资历的) shops. German law requires shops over a certain size selling bottled drinks have a Pfandruckgabestelle, or place for bottles with deposits (押金). These bottles usually made of glass or plastic will be refilled. Of course, there’re strict health regulations.

Honored for his generosity and selfless deeds, Lei Feng, an ordinary Chinese soldier with an extraordinary soul, has been a hero symbolizing altruism (利他主义). And across China, many foreign volunteers have warmed the hearts of Chinese people with their selfless commitment to social welfare, and are warmly called “Yang Lei Feng,” or foreign Lei Feng by locals.
In addition to his primary role as an English teacher at a vocational (职业的) school in Wuxi, Jiangsu Province, Peter Stanleigh, a Canadian, is also a Santa to homeless children, a guide, and an environmentalist. He has selflessly served various roles while leading a foreign volunteer team.
Having settled in Wuxi since 2001, Stanleigh is much better known by his Chinese name — Tang Lei. As the first foreign volunteer registered in Wuxi, he poured the majority of his spare time and energy into social welfare. “Lei Feng is a hero of volunteerism. So I long to pass on to other people the spirit of volunteering. I have been honored with the name Yang Lei Feng, something I carry nobly,” said Stanleigh.
Over the past two decades, Stanleigh has continuously expanded his public welfare efforts. In addition to volunteering in the English corner every week, he and his wife also make appearances at nursing and welfare homes, crowded cross ways and scenic spots — just like Lei Feng, who compared himself to a small yet indispensable part inside a machine while wholeheartedly serving the people.
Stanleigh’s volunteer service time registered in Wuxi has now gone beyond 5,000 hours. “I think that a person is judged not by what he does but by what he does for others. My life is better because someone else’s life is better,” he said. The Lei Feng spirit, a noble moral strength towering geographic limitations, is perfectly demonstrated in the deeds of countless foreign volunteers like Stanleigh throughout China.

Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei said last week that artificial intelligence could wipe out half of all entry-level white-collar jobs within five years, making the unemployment rate as high as 20%. Is that true?
Humans have experienced several technological disruptions (扰乱) before, and now we have adapted to meet them. AI won’t be any different. There was a time when the elevators in hotels and office buildings were staffed by human operators. Then in the 1930s, elevator companies began installing “robot elevators” with automatic controls, and eventually elevator operators completely disappeared, with no tide of unemployment.
Some people see AI as a job killer. However, research shows that broad adoption of AI could boost the country’s productivity growth by 1.5% per year, resulting in higher salaries, higher profits and more savings. Those people do not realize that the savings from increased productivity is recycled back into the economy. This creates new demand and in turn creates more jobs. Some are entirely new, such as “content creator assistant,” and others are existing jobs that are higher in demand because people have more money to spend — for example, personal trainers.
Further, there is a great deal of work that only humans can do. Self-driving school buses will still need an adult to watch the kids. As for police, AI robots won’t be arresting criminals anytime soon. It’s a similar story for CEOs, fashion models and flight attendants. Most occupations involve working with other people, with things or with ideas that are too complex for AI to handle alone.
Let’s imagine that Mr. Amodei’s forecast turns out to be accurate. Entry-level white-collar jobs account for less than 15% of the U. S. labor force. Wiping out half of them in five years would mean roughly 2.6 million jobs lost per year. That sounds like a lot, but the fact is that about 20 million U. S. workers are laid off every year. In other words, the supposed AI job loss, even if it occurred, would be the equivalent of only about six weeks of normal labor-market disturbance.
