I used to believe charity was about grand gestures and measurable results, something best left to professionals. That changed one rainy afternoon in a city park.
An elderly man, Mr. Dawson, sat on the same bench every day, feeding pigeons with crumbs he brought in a paper bag. His clothes were worn but neat. Most people hurried past, barely noticing him. To me, he was just part of the park’s scenery.
One day, a young boy, no more than seven, approached Mr. Dawson. He wasn’t asking for money or food. Instead, he pointed excitedly at the pigeons, asking, “Which one is the boss?” Mr. Dawson’s eyes crinkled into a smile. He spent the next ten minutes explaining the pigeons’ social hierarchy (等级制度), giving some of them names. The boy listened, utterly absorbed.
