B
I step out the back door and the blackness of night swallows me. There is no moon to light my way to the clothes-line and my forgotten wash. I’m piloted by the memory of a thousand trips along the familiar path. Soon my arms are piled with night-damp pants and shirts that have danced all day to the powerful wind.
The trip back is easier. The lights of the house guide me — great squares of amber light suspended in the darkness. Everything inside the house appears transformed. The kitchen cabinets look warmer, richer; the rows of jars and bottles are homier. Even the pine wall behind the stove glows with a new personality.
I back up farther into the yard. From here, I can see the living room. John’s head is bent over a spelling book, his hair golden in the lamplight, his face set with a frown of concentration. Robert kneels by the sofa, pushing a wheeled Lego along the cliff-edge of the cushion. The corner of a newspaper flaps into sight and disappears as Richard’s invisible hands turn the pages. I picture his absorbed face, studious-looking in new reading glasses. For a split second, I am a stranger peeking into a home I have never seen before.
What if I could never again touch John’s springy (有弹力的) hair or see Robert’s bright smile? Deep inside me, a door opens that barrier we set up to guard our secret selves and without conditions, I let my family in. All the annoyances that families are likely to feel, all the twists and stumbling blocks in our relationships, all the difficulties of living together in harmony become unimportant — overwhelmed by the simple fact that we love one another.
Moments like this don’t occur every day, and maybe that’s the way it should be. It would be exhausting to live our lives weighed down by such intensity of feeling. But the memory sustains me, just as the smell of fresh air clings to the clothes in my arms.
4. Why did the author go out in the dark?
A. To collect the clothes. B. To experience the powerful wind.
C. To escape from the chores. D. To enjoy the quietness of the night.
