What if the best learner in class never takes notes with a pen? When I first saw Lila in our school last term, I felt she was quite ____1____—she only brought a notebook and a tape recorder to lessons. ____2____ we hurried to write down every word the teacher said, she just sat quietly, ____3____ on the blackboard.
One day, our math teacher gave a surprise ____4____. Most of us didn’t know how to answer the questions, but Lila finished ____5____. When the teacher showed her paper with full marks to all of us, someone finally asked, “How do you remember everything without ____6____?”
Lila smiled and played a short recording. It was the ____7____ voice explaining key points. “I don’t write every word,” she said. “I record the parts I might ____8____, then listen to them while walking home. Writing down too much makes me ____9____ the teacher’s explanations.”
We soon noticed more about her. After class, she often stayed to ask the teacher follow-up questions ____10____ rushing to play. When she made mistakes in homework, she would write down the ____11____ clearly, not just the correct answers. What impressed (给……留下印象) me most was her willingness to help others. Once, she spent three lunch breaks helping our classmate understand grammar rules—she ____12____ made simple cards for him.
Now ____13____ thinks Lila is strange. She teaches us that being a good learner isn’t about working the hardest, but working the ____14____. TIME magazine picks the best inventions each year. Some solve big problems, while others make life more fun. Let’s look at some of the 2024 best inventions!
Shining Flowers
Why not stop and smell the shining Firefly Petunias (萤火虫牵牛花) when you can smell the roses? In the daytime, Firefly Petunias look like ordinary white flowers. When it gets dark, they shine like the moon. They might look magical, but their shining is something about science. You can grow these magical flowers at home.
Water Filters (过滤器)
People in some parts of the world don’t have clean water to drink. That’s why scientists created Filter Caps. They turn dirty water from rivers or lakes into safe drinking water. Each cap cleans only five liters of water a day. It’s perfect for places without clean water.
Mini Motor (发动机)
Ready to go fast? Bimotal Elevate is a small motor. It turns a pedal (踏板) bike into an electric bike, or e-bike. The motor can be set onto the wheel (车轮) of an ordinary bike and help you move forward as you ride. It can get your bike up to 20 miles an hour.

Reduction woodcut (绝版木刻) is a special kind of woodcut prints. It started in Pu’er, Yunnan in the 1980s. This kind of art shows history and culture in Yunnan, such as the lives of different ethnic minority groups (少数民族), making it much more wonderful and meaningful. It was listed as an intangible cultural heritage (非物质文化遗产) in 2009 in Pu’er. The reduction woodcut uses one piece of wood to make a colorful artwork. The artists cut and print different layers (层) in order on the same piece of wood. First, they choose the best wood, and then they need to think of a creative idea about how to make it. Next, they make a roughing-out (粗坯). After that, they carefully make it better with tools. Finally, when the artists paint and print the wood again and again, a beautiful artwork shows up.
Leng Guangmian, a reduction woodcut artist, thinks it’s not easy to finish such an artwork. It takes time. He said that making reduction woodcut prints is just like an adventure. Every time people cut on the wood and then print, people never know what it will be like until the end. As he sees beautiful patterns layer by layer, he only gets more excited, added Leng.
