On Nov 9, a big colorful Aoyu swam around at the opening ceremony of the 15th National Games of China. It has drawn many people’s attention with its special look. It was nearly 30 meters long and had the head of a dragon and the body of a fish!
In Guangdong, people love the Aoyu because it brings good luck. You can see Aoyu decorations on rooftops, and during festivals, people do the Aoyu dance. They wear costumes and move like the Aoyu to wish for good luck, nice weather and success in school. In 2007, the Aoyu dance was named an intangible cultural heritage (非物质文化遗产) in Guangdong province.
Xing Zeliang, 68, is an inheritor (继承人) of the Aoyu dance. He started learning it when he was 13. Xing remembers how hard it was at first. “I couldn’t even lift the head of Aoyu,” he told Chinese News Service. The head of the Aoyu is usually made of bamboo and paper. “It can weigh about 30 kilograms, and it is about 65 centimeters wide,” Xing said.
In the past, only men could do the dance. Now, Xing teaches everyone who wants to learn. He has also made the Aoyu lighter. Today, primary school students can dance with them easily.
