In the traditional Chinese lunar calendar(农历), there are 24 solar terms(节气) in a year. As the ninth solar term, mangzhong usually begins around June 5th and ends around June 21st.
When mangzhong comes, the weather gets hotter, the rain starts to fall and grains such as wheat become ripe(成熟的), and the plum(梅子) becomes ripe, too. That is why Chinese people believe that the start of mangzhong means the harvest time is coming.
Mangzhong is really a busy period for farmers. They are not only busy harvesting grains, but growing rice, vegetables and fruits. The plum rains come right after mangzhong. The areas in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River(长江中下游) will enter the plum rain season in this period. It is exactly not a good time for going out, but it is a great time for growing.
The long period of rainy and cloudy weather will last(持续) for two months. And flowers fall into piles upon the ground during this period. People in some areas have ceremonies(仪式) to say goodbye to the Flower Goddess(花神).
