Coming home from school on a dark winter day so long ago, I was filled with excitement of having the weekend off. But I was shocked into stillness by what I saw. Mother, sitting at the far end of the sofa, was ____1____, with the second-hand green typewriter on the table. She told me she lost her job because she couldn’t ___2___ quickly.
A sense of ____3____ went into my heart when I realized how ____4____ I understood the pressure on her. “I guess we all have to ____5____ something.” Mom said softly. I could feel her sadness, though she tried to hide it. I reached out and put my arms around her. She ____6____ then and couldn’t help crying noisily on my shoulder. I held her more tightly, knowing that staying by her side was ____7____. At that moment, she was still my mother, yet she was something ____8____: a person like me, able to fight against fear, ____9____ and failure.
A week later, Mom took a job selling dry goods, but the evening practice on the green typewriter continued. When I passed her door at night and heard her hitting the typewriter quickly and lightly across the paper, I felt so proud. It wasn’t just about typing—it was about her ____10____ to keep going, and how we supported each other.

A
Bye-Bye, Fly
In a marsh (湿地) somewhere in North Carolina, a hungry fly is looking for a meal. A plant called the Venus flytrap seems like a good bet. Its leaves, which grow in pairs like a clam’s shell, shine with a sweet juice. So the fly lands on a leaf. Then it takes a few steps toward the juice.
Snap! The leaves close tightly around the fly. It is trapped. Now, instead of enjoying the Venus flytrap’s sweet juice, the fly will be eaten by the plant.
Of course, most plants don’t eat insects. They can get all the nutrients (营养物) they need from the soil. But North Carolina’s marshes are missing some important nutrients. Few plants can grow there. The Venus flytrap can, though, because it gets the nutrients it needs from the insects it eats.
